BINH LIEU ARROWROOT VERMICELLI - A TASTE OF THE MOUNTAINS
Thanks to its unique taste, arrowroot vermicelli is considered a specialty in the mountainous district of Binh Lieu district.
Arrowroot is annually planted on an immense area of terraced fields from March to November when ripen rice fileds are harvested.
Planted in arid soil with no interference of chemical pepticides or fertilizers, arrowroot here provides good yields with less fiber and more powder.
Binh Lieu’s arrowroot vermicelli is processed in a traditional way, with clean water taken from streams and completely sun dried. Binh Lieu’s arrowroot vermicelli households used to make the product by hand, but now there are 8 large arrowroot vermicelli industrial production bases there. Arrowroot vermicelli production has become a profession bringing stable incomes for farmers in Binh Lieu.
That kind of vermicelli looks greenish, long and thin, which seems different from other common types which often appear to be yellow or white. It taste seems delicious in a strange way.
As one of the province’s 12 outstanding OCOP (One Commue One Product) products, Binh Lieu arrowroot vermicelli has currently been sold in most agricultural food shops and big trade centres in Quang Ninh with the price ranging from VND 90,000-120,000 per kilogram. Each pack is stamped with labels involving information on product origins, nutritional ingredients, and food hygiene and safety standards.
“The district will continue to expand the area of raw materials to about 120-150 hectare by 2021 and provide producers and traders with active support in order to increase the productivity, ensure product quality and promote the brandname of Binh Lieu arrowroot vermicelli”, said Ms Le Thi Thu Huong, Head of the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development under the Binh Lieu People’s Committee.
