Investment in seaports: Attracting big projects
The marine economy has been identified by Quang Ninh as the driving force and spearhead of the service-industrial economy. Realizing this goal, in 2019, the province issued Resolution 15-NQ/TU with a fully and clearly oriented roadmap for seaport development plans and seaport services in the area with 8 targets in 3 periods 2019-2025 and 2026-2030 and up to 2045.
On October 24, Quang Ninh held the groundbreaking ceremony of Van Ninh General Port (Mong Cai City).
Quang Ninh has the advantage of owning 250km of long coastline with over 6,000km2 of the sea surface, many deep-water ports, little sedimentation, accompanied by the synchronization of infrastructure and post-port services; the province is also located in the "two corridors, one economic circle" area, a gateway connecting ASEAN with China, international shipping routes... According to the Ministry of Transport, this Quang Ninh's marine economic condition has outstanding competitive advantages compared to other localities in the region. At the same time, being in line with the development trend of freight transport, which is currently popular in the world. Currently, Quang Ninh seaport is handling over 40.5% of the total volume of cargo and passengers in the Northern region.
Resolution 15-NQ/TU in the period of 2019-2025 was issued with the aim of building a well-positioned and branded Quang Ninh seaport area with high competitiveness, meeting domestic demand and international demand; revenue from seaport services contributes to economic restructuring, increasing added value, and the service sector's contribution to the province's GRDP; forming high-quality logistics service centers, at the same time exploiting the potential, developing a variety of advantageous services; strongly developing sea tourism, becoming a national tourist center connecting with major international tourist centers of the region and the world through sea.
After 2 years of implementing the resolution, seaport operations and revenue have remained basically stable, import and export activities by sea have not been interrupted, tending to grow in the second half of 2021. At the same time, step by step completing and developing a synchronous, modern and intelligent seaport system with high connectivity with modes of transport in the direction of streamlining, reducing transportation time and costs; develop seaport services with quality assurance, in line with the integration trend, and seaport services becoming one of the important services of the province.
MAERSK LINE will pilot container ships at CICT Cai Lan port in September 2021.
Notably, at the end of October 2021, Quang Ninh officially started construction of the Van Ninh General Port project, invested and built on an area of 82.79 hectares, in Van Ninh commune, Mong Cai city. Total investment in phase 1 of Van Ninh port is over VND 2,248 billion, expected construction period of 3 years. Quang Ninh also called for and attracted investment in Con Ong - Hon Net port (Cam Pha port cluster), where there is a deep water channel, which has welcomed the largest ship in the North with a tonnage of nearly 180,000 tons. The planned location for the construction of Con Ong - Hon Net port has a large calm anchorage area, although it is currently operating in the form of a floating port and transshipment, however, the port area accounts for over 60% of cargo through Quang Ninh's seaports.
With appropriate development perspectives, Quang Ninh seaport is having a breakthrough. In particular, the tourism and marine services industry has increasingly become a spearhead economic sector, actively contributing to socio-economic development and promoting economic restructuring. The maritime economy has developed, in which transportation services, seaports and seaport logistics have a new development, with a modern seaport system. Currently, Quang Ninh will focus on key tasks and solutions, in which, identifying marine economic development on the basis of green growth, conserving the biodiversity of marine ecosystems, ensuring harmony between the benefits of the locality with the sea and the locality without the sea...
